For each of us, it is important to conserve the special places that people value. If you’re a landowner looking to preserve the land you love, it can be the most important legacy you can pass on intact to your children and grandchildren.
Working with Glacial Lakes Conservancy to conserve the land you love takes planning. As part of this process, we recommend that you gather ideas and documents before you meet with GLC.
Here’s some options to consider:
- Make an inventory of your property, listing out what are the important features that need long-term protection.
- Use on-line resources to look at the natural resource values of your land. Visit the DNR’s surface water viewer for a landscape view of wetlands and surface waters.
- Refer to the USDA’s web soil survey to get a general idea of the limitations and protections needed for the soils of your property.
- If you are a bird watcher, or you planted tree seedlings, restored habitat or wetlands, keep an inventory of the plant and animal species you have noticed.
- Gather up photos and land surveys of your property that can be part of the planning process.
- Familiarize yourself with your Township’s “Smart Growth” Comprehensive Plan and any local changes to the land use patterns around your property. This could range from planned development projects to Agriculture Enterprise Areas (AEA).
- Talk with your family about your vision and what’s important to you.
