Conservation takes planning
Since 2003, mapping the Lake Michigan Basin and selecting priority targets has been one of the Glacial Lakes Conservancy’s goals. As a partner in the Lake Michigan Shorelands Alliance, one of our major initiatives has been the creation of a comprehensive conservation plan to identify priority areas for protection amid this landscape full of opportunity. A key element of this endeavor has been the production of maps to help reveal critical areas of concern and guide conservation planning.
On a community scale, that work has been done by Glacial Lakes through our local Landscapes of Opportunities planning.
On a watershed scale, that work has been done cooperatively with Gathering Waters and the Lake Michigan Shorelands Alliance.
For a local scale, the first project that the Conservancy had was to lead the Fischer Creek Alliance, when it was called the Sheboygan Area Land Conservancy. The Alliance set about to preserve undeveloped Lake Michigan shoreline at the Fischer Creek and Point Creek estuaries when there was immediate pressure to develop. From that early effort there were two incredible results; the creation of Wisconsin’s Fischer Creek State Park and Manitowoc County’s Point Creek Natural Area.
