Glacial Lakes Conservancy (GLC) is the local non-profit land trust for Sheboygan, Manitowoc, Kewaunee, Calumet and Fond du Lac Counties in the Lake Michigan, Great Lakes Basin.
As one of the approximately 50 land trusts in Wisconsin (and about 1700 in the U.S.) working for the public interest by protecting natural resources, GLC has been granted a 501 (c)3 charitable status since 1996. That means that donations of cash, conservation easements, IRAs, land, stocks and mutual funds are tax-deductible as allowed by law.
Glacial Lakes is committed to permanent land protection through private landowner conservation, stewardship of its preserves and easements, advocacy, and community leadership. GLC’s conservation work is made possible by the generosity of its members and donors and, occasionally, grants.
Private Landowner Conservation GLC projects most often partner with willing private landowners, using conservation easement agreements that leave land in private ownership while limiting development and protecting important conservation values. The conservation projects must meet the criteria and goals of the organization to qualify. Once in place, GLC has a commitment to monitor, enforce and defend every easement so that there is a legacy of protected land in place.
Buying and Owning Land GLC raises funds for the purchase of public lands, such as Point Creek Natural Area, or to own land outright. GLC currently owns the Wm. F. Christel Memorial Woods and Wetlands Preserve, which was a generous gift of land from Edward and Carole Christel Holsen.
Advocacy GLC participates in local land use planning & zoning committees and encourages resource protection policies.
Community Partner GLC enters into regional conservation partnerships & projects, such as the Lake Michigan Shoreland Alliance of Lake Michigan Basin land trusts.
